VPM News is searching for a journalist energized by the pace of daily news and passionate about editing and audio storytelling to be our Newscast Editor. Reporting into the Managing Editor, this role edits daily content for VPM News’ morning and afternoon newscasts and manages news radio hosts and reporters in our multiplatform newsroom.
VPM is a public media organization serving Central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. The VPM News team produces award-winning journalism for our NPR and PBS stations with distribution across digital channels to more than 2 million people in VPM’s coverage area. RESPONSIBILITIES
• Works closely with the Managing Editor and Digital News Editor to identify, assign and edit content for VPM News morning and afternoon newscasts.
• Prioritizes and assigns daily and long-range stories for reporters.
• Assists reporters with reporting strategies and developing their audio reporting skills.
• Facilitates daily editorial meetings alongside the editing team; sets daily deadlines, edits spot news, fact-checks stories and submits material for digital distribution.
• Manages the VPM News Daily Newscast and assists with BizSense Beat production.
• Assists in curating, writing and recording copy for newscasts and the web.
• Reports and produces news stories during breaking news and special coverage.
• Performs live newscast shifts on an ad-hoc basis.
• Participates in daily/weekly news meetings to shape the strategy for daily and ongoing coverage.
• Works with the Features Editor to identify daily news stories that could be developed into features.
• Works with the Managing Editor and Programming Manager to schedule and develop newscasts and news programming
• Assists in feature editing when the features editor is away.
QUALIFICATIONS
• At least 1 year of audio editing experience.
• At least 1-3 years of on air/news casting experience.
• Host and board operating experience is preferred.
• Familiarity with NPR and/or Associated Press Style.
• Experience managing other reporters is a plus.
• Public radio experience is a plus.
Hiring Range: $62,000 – $67,000.
