Good alleges counties overcharged for recount expenses
Reported by VPM News’ Billy Shields
U.S. Rep. Bob Good filed a motion on Aug. 22 alleging that several counties in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District improperly billed his campaign for expenses related to the recount he requested in this year’s Republican primary.
The recount, which was finalized earlier this month, confirmed that Good had lost to state Sen. John McGuire (R–Goochland), who will face Democrat Gloria Witt for the seat in November.
The motion objects to a wide range of costs assessed to his campaign by localities in the 5th District, from office supplies to employee salaries.
Report: homelessness on the rise in Greater Richmond
Reported by VPM News’ Sean McGoey
Homeward counted 585 people experiencing homelessness in Greater Richmond — which covers Charles City, Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent and Powhatan counties and the town of Ashland — in its annual July Point in Time report, released Aug. 23.
That’s a 20% increase from the July 2023 count, driven largely by a rise in those experiencing “unsheltered homelessness” — people staying outdoors or in places not meant for habitation, like cars. “We can’t allow this to become a new normal for our region,” said Kelly King Horne, Homeward’s executive director, in a statement.
