Richmond school board discusses cellphone-free education
Reported by VPM News’ Keyris Manzanares

Richmond Public Schools aims to implement policies in accordance with Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s executive order to establish cellphone-free education.

The Virginia Department of Education released a cellphone guidance document for school divisions on Aug. 15 — but questions remain about how to apply the model policies locally.

“Now, knowing that this is a hot topic, and there are positive and negative perspectives, we want to make sure that everyone ... has an opportunity to give some feedback,” RPS Chief Wellness Officer Renesha Parks said during a school board meeting.

Youngkin’s executive order indicates that school districts need to have a plan in place by Jan. 1, 2025.

Harris, Youngkin get good news in new polls
Reported by VPM News’ Jahd Khalil

Survey results released Tuesday indicate Virginia voters prefer Vice President Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump in the race for president. One poll also showed Gov. Glenn Youngkin with a high approval rating.

The numbers, which were collected between the end of August and this past weekend, are a notable shift from those recorded before President Joe Biden exited the race, when polls showed a statistical tie in Virginia.

Harris’ lead in each poll is larger than the margin of error.
