Hanover registrar expects at least 40,000 early, in-person votes
Reported by VPM News’ Lyndon German

A coalition of GOP-led voters raised concerns last month about Hanover County’s election security — but Teri Smithson, the county’s general registrar, said this week that Hanover is well-prepared for the 2024 election.

“Voting seems to be a hot topic every four years, but quite frankly, we do this every single year,” Smithson said during a Board of Supervisors meeting Wednesday.

Smithson also said she expects a significant increase in the number of Hanover residents casting early ballots. In 2020, 34,000 people voted early; this time, Smithson expects “at least 40,000 people to come through the Wickham Building” once voting opens Sept. 20.

Panel discusses “refresh” of Richmond’s zoning ordinances
Reported by VPM News’ Billy Shields

About 50 Richmond residents congregated Wednesday night at Dogwood Middle School to hear a panel of transit, housing and planning experts discuss the future of the city’s zoning rules.

Richmond is working to “refresh” its zoning code for the first time since 1976 — a process neighboring counties are working through as well.

Andy Boenau, who writes a Substack newsletter about urban infrastructure, moderated the panel, asking a series of questions about zoning-related issues that will likely steer the city’s future over the next 20 years, like how RIchmond can solve its affordable housing crisis and encourage a more pedestrian-friendly approach to streets.
