RGGI lawsuit heads to Floyd County Circuit Court Monday
Reported by VPM News’ Patrick Larsen

The Association of Energy Conservation Professionals’ lawsuit argues that Virginia officials lack the authority to exit the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. Monday’s court date follows the state’s failed attempts to have the suit thrown out failed over the summer.

A 2024 budget amendment would have ordered the Air Board to rejoin RGGI, but it was dropped in negotiations earlier this year. Virginia received $827.7 million in revenue through the program to be spent on flood mitigation and energy efficiency projects.

Boar’s Head closes Southside Virginia plant
Reported by VPM News’ Billy Shields

Following a bacterial outbreak of listeria linked to the hospitalization of dozens and nine deaths, the Boar’s Head Provisions Co. has announced the indefinite closure of its Jarratt meat-packing plant.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched an investigation into what it described as the largest Listeria outbreak in the United States since 2011 — linked to liverwurst produced at the Jarratt plant between June 11 and July 17 and shipped internationally. That outbreak triggered a massive recall of more than 7 million pounds of meat.

Boar’s Head also announced it will permanently stop producing liverwurst.
