It's Time to Participate in a Virtual Science Fair

Virtual Science Fair

During these unique times, students everywhere are home bound, and MEDARVA Healthcare, along with local school systems, has committed to promoting continued learning (and fun) with an eye toward scientific research by creating a Virtual Science Fair.

The 2020 MEDARVA Healthcare Virtual Science Fair is an online science fair to encourage and support the sciences in the Richmond, Virginia area. Any student in grades 6-12 is encouraged to apply. The deadline for submissions is May 15, 2020 and they are rewarding excellence in scientific research by way of cash prizes.

“Our research colleagues have indicated to us that the overall number of physician-scientists is steadily decreasing, and we see it as a part of our mission to encourage students who may be considering a career in this field. It is evident, especially in times like these, that the development of scientific minds is critically important to us all,” says Bruce Kupper, President and CEO of MEDARVA Healthcare. “The participants in science fairs today could be the breakthrough researchers of tomorrow, and MEDARVA Healthcare is excited to strengthen them on their way.”

Since its inception and founding in Richmond in 1952, MEDARVA Healthcare has been committed to achieving scientific and medical advancements in order to solve real-life problems. Back then it was known as the Richmond Eye and Ear Hospital, but today, MEDARVA is much more. In addition to operating the region’s leading surgery centers – Stony Point and West Creek – MEDARVA operates a vision and hearing screening program for the region’s pre-K students and the region’s only full-service Low Vision and TBI Clinic.

MEDARVA also funds innovative and novel scientific research projects at three medical schools in the Commonwealth - VCU, UVA, and EVMS. These projects are aimed at achieving important medical breakthroughs and through these research grants, physician-scientists have been able to understand diseases, create cures, and restore lost senses.

And in order to encourage and reward this same sort of scientific motivation in the next generation, MEDARVA Healthcare is sponsoring a region-wide virtual science fair this spring.
