3. CURATOR'S TALK: WHEN MAN RAY MET WALLIS SIMPSON

The many discoveries uncovered in curatorial research for the Virginia Museum of Fine Art exhibition Man Ray: The Paris Years include one involving American socialite Wallis Simpson, who visited Man Ray's Paris studio in 1936, only a few years before the start of World War II. At that time, Simpson, who was married to her second husband, the Anglo American shipping executive Ernest Aldrich Simpson, was having an affair with England's King Edward VIII. King Edward's declaration of his intention to marry Simpson created a constitutional crisis that would lead to his abdication later that year. Please join Dr. Michael Taylor, curator of Man Ray: The Paris Years, for this fascinating lecture on the role that Man Ray's portraits of Simpson played in the scandal that forever changed the course of British history. It is that third type that author and former VMHC president and CEO Charles Bryan addresses in many of the essays in Volume 2 of Imperfect Past. Bryan challenges many of the assumptions about the past his generation was taught in schools some sixty years ago. Presented by Virginia Museum of History and Culture. The Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University brings an exhibition featuring the work of Sila Chanto & Belkis Ramírez: Aquí Me Quedo/Here I Stay. The show presents Chanto (Costa Rica, 1969-2015) and Ramírez (Dominican Republic, 1957-2019) in direct exchange, emphasizing their experimental printmaking techniques, embodied feminism and political dissent, which defined the exceptional work of both women. It’s Art Works 19th year of the annual Simply Photography exhibit. Artists from all over Virginia submitted photography showcasing a variety of subjects and photographic methods. 10. OPERATION URGENT FURY: THE INVASION OF GRENADA, 1983

Virginia War Memorial Director, Clay Mountcastle, is joined by Appomattox native and VWMF Board Director Major General Robert “Bo” Dyess, USA, Ret. to examine the U.S. invasion of Grenada in October 1983. General Dyess served with the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division during the operation and will share his experiences in Grenada and serving in an Army that was rapidly evolving in the 1980s.
