While Virginians are being ordered to “stay-at-home,” the Governor is encouraging people to get outside and exercise. Now, Virginia’s Capital Trail is seeing a surge in use.

The 52 miles of paved trails from Richmond to Jamestown are green and inviting – especially to Virginians cooped up inside. In March, visitors to the Virginia Capital Trail were up 65% compared to the same time last year.

The executive director of the trail’s foundation, Cat Anthony, says it attracts bikers, runners, skateboarders, and now even people simply out to buy groceries. She said, “We know it’s very, very valuable to people, especially during stressful situations. Time to find solace and connect to the outdoors.”

But Anthony says to follow CDC guidelines if you plan to visit, keep six feet away from others, wear a cloth face covering and avoid crowds. The CDC also recommends only visiting parks and trails close to home, to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19.
