VPM documentary Shenandoah will premiere at Virginia Film Festival

The Shenandoah Valley boasts sprawling mountains, winding rivers and a diverse population of wildlife. The Valley’s beauty, history and transformation are the subject of VPM’s new documentary Shenandoah, which is set to premiere at the Virginia Film Festival on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 11:30 a.m. at the Culbreth Theater.

Co-produced by VPM and Orange Frame Productions, Shenandoah explores the vast geography of the Valley, a place that has evolved for millions of years and continues to adapt today. The constant change is driven by the region’s many species, geology and human history, all of which play a role in its story. With stunning cinematography from two renowned National Geographic filmmakers, the film also explores the history of the park itself, chronicling how the physical landscape and its cultural impact has shifted over time.

In addition to the screening, audiences will be treated to a panel discussion on the film moderated by VPM Chief Content Officer Steve Humble. There will be an introduction by co-executive producer Anna Boedeker, before Steve leads the discussion with director Elizabeth Crowl, Evan Childress (Division Chief of Natural and Cultural Resources, Shenandoah National Park), Claire Comer (Interpretive Specialist, Shenandoah National Park), and Robert Cox (UVA).

The film is dedicated to late director Jeff Boedeker, who unexpectedly passed away during production. Harnessing Jeff’s vision, Anna Boedeker (owner of Orange Frame Productions) continued the project as executive producer, embodying his inspired pursuit to share never-before-seen perspectives of the world.

This year’s Virginia Film Festival takes place from Oct. 22-26. The event is now in its 38th year and is a program of the University of Virginia. The annual festival seeks to educate and engage audiences in an open dialogue on the art of film, to foster conversations between audiences, artists, students, and academics around films, all while showcasing filmmakers of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
