VPM is deeply saddened to share that Dr. Charles “Charlie” Sydnor has passed away. Charlie served as President & CEO of our organization, then known as the Central Virginia Educational Telecommunication Corporation, from 1992 to 2006. In fact, the studios at VPM’s headquarters at 23 Sesame Street are named after him.

“Charlie was truly a larger-than-life figure whose remarkable career spanned multiple industries. He served as a speechwriter for Virginia Governor Charles S. Robb, president of Emory & Henry University and president and executive director of the Virginia Holocaust Museum,” said VPM President & CEO Jayme Swain.
“A passionate historian, Charlie devoted much of his life to telling the stories of World War II and the Holocaust, ensuring that the persecution of the Jewish people would never be forgotten.”
Swain continued, “I had the great fortune of spending time with Charlie since I joined VPM. He was a brilliant and captivating storyteller with an enormous heart. Public media was one of his deepest passions, and he cared profoundly about the people of this organization and the community we serve.
Charlie played an important role in VPM’s history, and his legacy will endure. He will be sorely missed.”
