Virginia Home Grown (VHG) has always worked to spread the message that gardening is for everyone and that we’re all growing and learning together. The VHG team turned that message into action on Feb. 21 when it hosted a Community Gardening Gathering at the Dorey Park Recreation Center!

“The day was a celebration of community gardening. VPM’s response to a VHG viewer’s question asking where to learn how to start a community garden was not one of words, but one of action by organizing the Community Garden Gathering,” said Virginia Home Grown host Peggy Singlemann.
Over 70 participants attended the event in Eastern Henrico County that featured several keynote speakers sharing their expertise on gardening, as well as breakout sessions where folks were able to gain additional insights.
The idea for the community gardening event was sparked by viewer questions that were received on VHG. The show received a handful of questions about assistance for community gardens. After doing some research, the VHG team found that there were ample resources throughout the region, but there weren’t any events nearby that were focused on community gardens.
Topics for the event were formed from a survey that was sent last year, asking people to rank which topics were most important to them.
Peggy continued, “Although the gathering was filled with educational sessions, what brought everyone together was the networking and sharing. The day proved we are all one community working to meet the need for affordable fresh produce no matter the location of the garden.”
VHG is one of VPM’s longest-running shows and is celebrating its 25th year. The show’s mission is to enrich growers and gardeners of all levels by connecting to new voices and fresh ideas, to highlight the unique richness of gardens and natural ecosystems throughout Virginia and serve as a resource for our community. The show introduces audiences to experts and plant enthusiasts from across Virginia by offering how-to demos and video visits to gardens, farms and growing sites.
