How Virginia’s Latinos voted in the 2024 election
Reported by VPM News’ Keyris Manzanares

Across the nation, 55% of Latino voters supported Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. But Trump was backed by 43% of Latino voters — up from 35% when he ran against President Joe Biden in 2020, according to exit polling from The Associated Press. And Latino men, who voted for Biden by a 59–38 margin four years ago, split nearly evenly in 2024, 49–48 in favor of Harris.

VPM News spoke to several Latino voters about what motivated them to choose a particular candidate.

Many, like Josue Castillo, said they voted with community in mind. An organizer with New Virginia Majority, Castillo voted for Harris — but said he wasn’t surprised by a record-setting number of Latinos voting for Trump.

“We are very diverse when it comes to opinions, when it comes to different needs for our communities,” he said. “I think there's a tendency to believe that all Latinos support Democrats; however, we saw that in this election, that wasn't the case.”

Boar's Head listeria outbreak is over, CDC officials say
Reported by The Associated Press

A deadly outbreak of listeria food poisoning tied to a massive recall of popular Boar's Head deli meats processed in a Southside Virginia plant is over, officials with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.

Ten people died and 61 were sickened in 19 states after eating listeria-contaminated Boar's Head products, including liverwurst. Illnesses were reported between late May and mid-September, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and listeria outbreaks are considered over 60 days after the last reported illness.

After recalling more than 7 million pounds of Boar's Head deli meats distributed nationwide, company officials shut down a production plant in Jarratt, Virginia, and permanently stopped making liverwurst.

Boar's Head faces continued scrutiny over dozens of reports of problems at the Jarratt factory, including mold, insects, dripping water and contaminated walls, floors and equipment.
