A new champion on Capitol Square
Each year, Virginia lawmakers take a break from the hectic General Assembly schedule for a unique celebration of another year of progress on Chesapeake Bay restoration — an oyster-eating competition on Capitol Square.
Reigning champion Del. Michael Webert (R–Culpeper) showed up with a custom WWE-style championship belt, but he was happy to pass the baton to a new winner in 2025: Del. Shelly Simonds (D–Newport News), who was backed by a posse wearing T-shirts with her face superimposed on an oyster shell.
“We want this to not just be about eating the most oysters,” Simonds said. “We want to enjoy Virginia oysters the most. More than anyone.”
