How Technology Changed Sports

Science Pub | RVA

Fast suits, racing bicycles, athletic shoes, and drugs. Sports have been radically transformed by an explosion of scientific and technological advances in materials, training, nutrition, and medicine dedicated to manufacturing victory. Purdue University's Dr. Rayvon Fouché will walk into a bar to discuss his research on how technoscience has changed the games we love to watch and play.

Who

Dr. Rayvon Fouche’s scholarship on invention and innovation explores the multiple intersections and relationships between cultural representation, racial identification, and technoscientific design. He has authored or edited several books including Black Inventors in the Age of Segregation and Game Changer: The Technoscientific Revolution in Sports. Fouché is the Director of the American Studies Program as well as a Professor at Purdue University. He received a B.A. in Humanities from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a Ph.D. from Cornell University in the interdisciplinary field of Science & Technology Studies, and completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in African and African-American Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. A former elite cyclist, he was one of many hopefuls that competed in the 1992 Olympic trials.

What is Science Pub RVA?

Science Pub RVA is an environment – a place for curious minds and creative thinkers to explore fascinating topics in an environment where no science background is expected. Programs are intentionally informal and designed for adults. Pub is in our name, but sipping a glass of water is common and cool. We’re about enjoying the night’s topic and each other, not about whatever liquids are in hand.
