Richmond, Va. - In April 2018, Richmond made major headlines after The New York Times reported on data showing the city had the nation’s second highest eviction rate for 2016. Four other Virginian cities cracked the top 10 -- Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk and Chesapeake. The coverage prompted new discussions about the eviction process and the lack of affordable housing in Virginia.
In an effort to dig deeper into the root causes and effects of this problem, VPM News is partnering with VCU’s L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs and the University College to co-host a panel discussion titled “Eviction Beyond the Numbers: Community Impacts and Policy Landscape of Housing Instability” at the university’s W.E. Singleton Center for the Performing Arts on Sept. 26 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
This event, which is free and open to the public, has connections both to VCU’s 2019 Common Book selection, Matthew Desmond’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City” and to the ongoing, award-winning VPM News series “Where We Live,” which looks at housing issues in Virginia, including policy, affordability, homelessness and segregation. As a lead up to this panel discussion, “Where We Live” featured a special three-part series specifically focused on eviction.
"This is a really important issue that we've been dedicating a lot of time and resources to over the past year,” said Bill Miller, Vice President and General Manager of VPM News. “For us to be invited to partner with the Wilder School in this way is a reflection of our hard work and an opportunity to continue the discussion and solution-seeking in a new venue."
VPM News reporter Megan Pauly will moderate the discussion. Panelists will include:
- Jackie Washington, director of Six Points Innovation Center
- Phil Storey, Campaign to Reduce Evictions (CARE) attorney, Virginia Poverty Law Center
- Va. State Senator Jennifer McClellan
The event will also include a presentation by VCU Wilder School faculty members Kathryn Howell and Benjamin Teresa, co-founders of the RVA Eviction Lab.
