March is Women’s History Month and RVA’s arts and culture community has created a wonderful line-up of exhibits, performances, and educational programs to enlighten and inspire. Be on the lookout this month for local female artists, musicians, dancers, writers, and historians highlighting the amazing contributions women have made and continue to make in our world today.
1. BEETHOVEN IN VIENNA

Beethoven is at the heart of this Richmond Symphony concert, with the majestic Piano Concerto n.1 and the sunny and cheerful Symphony n.4 that in its brightness recalls the symphonies of Haydn, with whom Beethoven had studied a decade before. Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Martinez, First Prize winner of the Anton Rubinstein International Piano Competition, will make her debut with the Richmond Symphony in this masterwork. Join the Symphony for a safe, socially-distanced in-person concert OR watch from home via their online livestream option. 2. MOVIE MYTHBUSTING: RUBY BRIDGES

Join The Virginia Museum of History and Culture for a Women’s History Month viewing of Ruby Bridges about the real-life tale of one of the first African-American children to attend an integrated school in the Deep South. Watch the film in advance, whenever or however works best for you, and then log into an interactive Zoom presentation where special guests from the Moton Museum will join the discussion to chat about Barbara Johns and Virginia’s school integration story. This FAMILY FRIENDLY program is free, but registration is required.

The Bridge Progressive Art Initiative opens their March exhibit, Miscengenation from artist Larissa Rogers. Displaying in the large windows of the community art gallery, Miscegenation applies identity politics to interrogate narratives of cultural hybridity, further complicating ideas associated with the capaciousness of blackness. Through creating tension between material, image, and text Rogers explores the cultural construction of identity, particularly that of black female subjectivity, as shaped by the experience of diaspora. 9. Harold Mendez: Let us gather in a flourishing way

The Institute of Contemporary Art’s new exhibition Let us gather in a flourishing way travels through 10 years of work by Harold Mendez, presenting questions about history, geography, class and race. Comprising a selection of nearly 20 works in sculpture, printmaking, and photography, Mendez invites viewers to explore the tension between fiction and truth, visibility and absence, and how history and geography shape our sense of self and our relationship to the world. The exhibit will be on view from February 26 through June 27. Registration is free but you must reserve your spot online.
