Founded by Yehudi Menuhin in 1983 the Menuhin Competition is the world's leading international competition for young violinists. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s competition, hosted in Richmond, Virginia, will be entirely virtual.

Young violinists selected from around the world to participate will perform via video recital for the jury and for a global audience. The repertoire covers three centuries including works by Bach, Kreisler, Mozart, Paganini, Rode, Schubert and Telemann as well as each Senior competitor’s choice of a recently composed work for solo violin.

Next week’s First Round performances set the stage for the full competition, scheduled for May 14-23, 2021. Ten Juniors ages 12 to 15 will advance to the Junior Semi-Finals set to stream on May 15, and nine Seniors ages 16 to 22 will advance to the Senior Semi-Finals set to stream on May 16.  Junior and Senior semi-finalists will be announced after the last competitor in each section, on April 27 and 29, respectively. Competitors will participate in the same section for which they qualified for the originally scheduled competition in 2020, delayed until this year due to COVID-19.

The Menuhin Competition Richmond 2021 will be produced, streamed and televised by VPM. VPM Music will also broadcast the competition locally on 107.3 FM and 93.1 FM, as well as streamed digitally online. The events will be viewable on the  Menuhin Competition Richmond 2021 website, YouTube Channel, and VPM’s Menuhin website. See the Menuhin schedule for viewing times.
