VPM, together with its producing partners, has received four Regional Emmy Awards from the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Since 1958, the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter has worked to foster and recognize outstanding achievement in television production throughout Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

The Capital Emmy Award-winning programs and series produced and/or presented by VPM, Virginia’s home for public media, in 2020 include:

The Future of America's Past (Producer: Field Studio)

  • Historical/Cultural - Short Form Content, "A Public Calamity"
  • Hannah Ayers and Lance Warren, Co-Directors

In the shadow of the coronavirus pandemic, “A Public Calamity” examines the impact of the 1918 flu pandemic on Richmond, Va. and explores the catastrophic effects of reopening too soon.

The Future of America’s Past (Producer: Field Studio)

  • Magazine Program (Single Program), "School Interrupted"
  • Hannah Ayers and Lance Warren, Co-Directors

From the series’ second season, “School Interrupted” explores how a student strike in Prince Edward County, Va. became part of the effort that culminated in the Supreme Court’s landmark decision Brown v. Board of Education, outlawing segregated schools.

Un-Wine'd (Producer: VPM)

  • Lifestyle – Long Form Content
  • Shari Pennington, Producer; Tassie Pippert, Host/Producer

On every episode of this VPM original series, now filming its fourth season, host Tassie Pippert explores Virginia winemaking traditions and puts together delicious recipes that pair well with featured local wines.

HEARD (Producer: Belltower Pictures)

  • Documentary - Cultural | Topical
  • David Powers, Producer; Martin Montgomery, Director; Angelia Kane, Associate Producer

"HEARD" captures the inspiring stories of four people who grew up in “the projects,” surviving and thriving in spite of, and often because of, the challenges they've had to overcome. Now they’re giving back to their home communities, trying to make a better life for those who come behind.

“Storytelling and connecting to our community are at the heart of what we do,” said Steve Humble, Chief Content Officer at VPM. “Told well, such stories can add context to our world, engage us and help us learn from others who may not always have a voice. Being recognized by our peers for this is special. I am so proud of the ‘Un-Wine'd’ team at VPM and our partners Field Studio and Belltower Pictures for receiving these awards.”

A recording of the June 26th virtual awards gala and the full list of Capital Emmy nominees and recipients are available at CapitalEmmys.TV/Emmys. Winners in each nomination category are indicated by an asterisk.
