2. TUDOR HOME ARTS: A VIRTUAL KIDS’ CRAFTING EVENT

Join Agecroft Hall for a cozy virtual crafting day! Whether you are bundled up by the fire or working in your warm winter kitchen, you will be able to enjoy Tudor needlework and cooking activities like those that kids in the 17th century took joy in. Children ages 5-11 will enjoy a curated box full of fun supplies that allows them to complete six home arts themed projects, including blackwork embroidery and dinner rolls in a jar! Craft instructions will be available online during the event, and the Agecroft team of educators will be on hand throughout the day to provide support and encouragement. Register online.


3. NATIONAL DAY OF RACIAL HEALING: SOCIAL-ACTIVIST SINGER-SONGWRITER CRYS MATTHEWS IN CONCERT!

January 18 is the sixth annual National Day of Racial Healing. In recognition of this day when people come together in solidarity for racial healing and to take action to dismantle systemic racism, Coming to the Table – RVA, along with Coming To The Table sister local groups in the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as the Richmond Pledge To End Racism, are presenting a FREE (by optional donation) virtual concert featuring self-described “social-justice singer-songwriter," Crys Matthews. The Weinstein Jewish Community Center’s annual Israeli Film Festival is dedicated to fostering an understanding of Israeli culture and access to Israel’s young but thriving film industry. The festival features films based upon various considerations such as awards or nominations, timely subject matter and input from the film community. 5. ARTSPACE JANUARY/FEBRUARY EXHIBITIONS OPENING RECEPTION

A dynamic group of three regional artists’ contemporary artwork will be on display at Artspace nonprofit gallery’s new location. The gallery will showcase the work of April Flanders, Donna Frostick, and Hope Morgan. During the January show, an exhibit of art produced by members of the gallery will also be on display, illustrating the range and diversity of the membership. No registration required.


6. ORGAN CONCERT WITH DEXTER KENNEDY

Dexter Kennedy will kick off local observances of the 200th anniversary of the birth of César Franck (1822-1890) with a recital of works by the great nineteenth-century French composer on St. Stephen’s 63-stop Aeolian-Skinner organ. 7. MAKING HISTORY WITH THE LIBRARY OF VIRGINIA

With more content and research moving online, the Library of Virginia seeks to make digital documents as accessible as possible by crowdsourcing their contents. Volunteers will transcribe handwritten pages and historical newspapers by reading the text and typing it into digital form. Join us for a volunteer session to learn how you can help make historical documents more searchable and usable for researchers now and in the future. Register online for this free event.


8. JAMES RIVER SHORT FILMS SHOWCASE

9. ORPHEUS CHAMBER ORCHESTRA WITH BRANFORD MARSALIS

The famed conductorless orchestra and the saxophonist from one of the most beloved families in all of music continue their longstanding and fruitful collaboration. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Branford Marsalis will perform Debussy’s jazz-inflected Rhapsody for Alto Saxophone and Chamber Orchestra, Ibert’s  Concertino da camera, and a newly commissioned work by Courtney Bryan built around Bizet’s famous themes from  Carmen. Presented by Modlin Center for the Arts. This intimate concert showcases Richmond Symphony’s own Mary Boodell in C. P. E. Bach’s Flute Concerto. Guest Conductor, Emanuele Andrizzi, also leads the Orchestra in Stacy Garrop’s celebratory Spectacle of Light and Schumann’s euphoric “Rhenish” Symphony.
