2022 Afrikana Film Festival will feature 2 VPM films

2022 Afrikana Film Festival
The 7th Annual Afrikana Film Festival takes place from September 15-18.

VPM is thrilled to present two films at the 7th Annual Afrikana Film Festival, which takes place from September 15-18 in Richmond, VA. The Afrikana Film Festival was founded in 2014 by Enjoli Moon and is dedicated to using high-quality, well-crafted stories to elevate Black culture.

Both films bring viewers on a journey through local neighborhoods showing how systemic racism has affected our communities. They will each be screened at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia in Downtown Richmond.

VPM will first present MENDING WALLS, a documentary that details the groundbreaking public art project created by Hamilton Glass aimed at establishing empathy and connection through local art. Directed and produced by Pam and Todd Hervey of 19RED, the project was created in the wake of community unrest following the death of George Floyd, bringing together 30 artists to create 16 murals and spark conversations and promote healing.

VPM will also present RAISED/RAZED, a documentary that takes a deep dive into Vinegar Hill, Charlottesville, VA’s oldest African-American neighborhood, charting the lives of residents as they faced racially discriminatory policies and a government that was actively pushing them out. Written and directed by Lorenzo Dickerson and Jordy Yager, the film also explores the federal Urban Renewal program and the broader history of its effect in Durham, NC and other communities across America.

VPM is a sponsor of the Afrikana Film Festival.
