“Portraits: The Style Weekly Photograph Archive” at The Valentine

Since 1982, one of Style Weekly’s most distinguishable features is the arresting photography featured in both its print issues and online. In that time, Style’s photographers captured some of the most significant moments in our town’s history. Many of these images are now on display at The Valentine as part of its new exhibit “Portraits: The Style Weekly Photograph Archive.”

“This exhibition is the ultimate testament to the significance of local journalism,” said Style Weekly general manager Macaulay Hammond. “For 40 years, Style Weekly has been at the heart of the action, capturing pivotal Richmond people, places, and moments. Each portrait tells a story—whether of politicians, restaurateurs, or artists. These narratives offer deep insights and serve as a barometer for Richmond's cultural and societal pulse at the time they were captured.”

All five of the staff photographers Style employed over the years are featured in the exhibit: Kent Eanes, Scott Elmquist, Chad Hunt, Jay Paul and Stephen Salpukas. Elmquist has been the staff photographer since 1999 and his photography was also featured in the 40th Anniversary Issue back in 2022.

To learn more about the exhibit and some of the history behind it, you can read this article on the Style Weekly website. The exhibit will be at The Valentine until May 26, 2025.
