Kids join VPM’s construction site for the day

Kids can be tough to entertain these days! But it gets a little easier when you have a cool construction site to show them and a day’s worth of activities to keep them busy! VPM recently joined partner Clark Construction Group on Apr. 24 at the site of VPM’s future headquarters (15 E. Broad St) for ‘Take Your Child to Work Day.’

“We always have a great time welcoming our kids into the big world of construction for the day,” said Brandon Shaw, Clark Construction Group’s business unit leader in Central Virginia. “It’s awesome to be able to show our kids what we do each day and even better when they leave inspired. It was a fun day and we were glad to have VPM on site as volunteers.”

‘Take Your Child to Work Day’ is an annual tradition for Clark Construction Group, and this year’s event was particularly exceptional as the trade and craft workers for the construction site also were able to bring their children to work. Combined with the attendance of several VPM volunteers, this year’s event was extra special.

“We loved the opportunity to use our new building, even in the construction stage, for our project partners and trade and craft workers to show off their talents,” said VPM Chief Operating Officer Meg Garner. “Who knows what impact this experience will have or where it may lead them in the future.”

Children in attendance had the opportunity to participate in several activities throughout the day. The day began with members of Clark Construction Group’s team leading a group stretching exercise to make sure everyone was loose and ready to walk around the construction site. Then, equipped with their hard hats and safety vests, the kids got to take a tour of the jobsite at VPM’s soon-to-be new headquarters.

After that, everyone got to participate in some hands-on activities, which included learning about how concrete is made by substituting cookie dough and pretzels, as well as how structures get built by substituting paper cups and popsicle sticks. The kids also took the time to make personal cards for VCU Health patients. Finally, VPM had a sound booth on site where the kids were able to record a message that will be played on VPM’s radio airwaves.
