VPM wins 2 Capital Emmy Awards

Capital Emmys 2025

VPM's producing partners have won 2 regional Emmy Awards from the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, also known as The Capital Emmys.

“VPM is committed to creating content that reflects the diverse communities we serve, and it’s a true honor to see the outstanding work of our production teams recognized by the Emmys,” said Steve Humble, VPM’s Chief Content Officer. “We’re deeply grateful to our partners who collaborate with us to bring these compelling programs to life, and we look forward to continuing our mission of providing Virginians with meaningful, informative content.”

The Capital Emmy-award-winning programs and series produced and/or presented by VPM include:

Historical/Cultural - Short Form Content (Up to 10 minutes)
Finding Edna Lewis | The Journey Starts Here

  • Hannah Ayers, Producer/Editor/Sound Mixer
  • Debra Freeman, Producer/Host
  • Lance Warren, Producer/Editor/Cinematographer

Historical/Cultural - Long Form Content (Longer than 10 minutes)
Cash Crop

  • Lorenzo Dickerson, Writer/Director

Finding Edna Lewis follows host Deb Freeman on a journey to uncover the life of an American original. Little archival footage or audio featuring Edna Lewis survives, but Freeman finds that memories of her remain strong not only among those who knew her best, but also chefs who have discovered her cookbooks.

Cash Crop brings audiences to Southern Virginia where Black farmers like Cecil Shell balance their interests in honoring their tradition of tobacco farming against the onset of solar energy farms exploding across the region. Through Cecil, the film explores one rural county’s shifting economic interests and his own efforts to steward the community, including Black landowners, through changing times. Cash Crop was created for the Hindsight project for Reel South, a PBS documentary series in which VPM is a partner.
