Updated 10:15 p.m.: Jones secures Democratic AG nod; lt. governor race appears headed for a recount.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Democratic voters in Virginia were tasked Tuesday with choosing their party's nominees for lieutenant governor and attorney general. There were also nominating contests for 15 seats in the House of Delegates, and local races of interest in both the Richmond and Charlottesville areas.

The polls closed at 7 p.m. Tuesday, and VPM News is tracking the apparent winners of primaries across Central Virginia.

Note: All results are unofficial until they are certified by the state.

Statewide office

Lieutenant governor

The Associated Press has not called the race; state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi is holding a narrow lead over former Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney and state Sen. Aaron Rouse as of 9:50 p.m., but it appears that the race could wind up in the recount threshold.

Losing candidates can call for a recount if they finish within 1% of the winner after the state certifies election results; as of 10:15 p.m., Stoney (26.6%) was within 1 percentage point of Hashmi (27.4%) — and Rouse was just outside the threshold at 26.3%, with 96% of votes counted according to AP.

Attorney general

Shortly before 10 p.m., AP called the race for former Norfolk Del. Jay Jones, who leads Henrico County Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor by just under 10,000 votes.

House of Delegates

District 57

Businesswoman May Nivar appears to be the Democratic nominee, defeating Andrew Schear. The Associated Press called the race at around 8:25 p.m.

Nivar will take on Republican incumbent Del. David Owen in the general election.

District 62

Karen Hamilton looks set to be the Republican nominee to succeed departing Del. Nick Freitas; AP called the race for her over Clay Jackson just before 10 p.m.

Hamilton will face Democrat Sara Ratcliffe, who lost to Freitas in the district's 2023 general election, in November.

District 72

Randolph Critzer is the apparent winner of the district's Democratic primary over Bilal Raychouni; AP called the race just before 8:30 p.m.

Critzer will take on longtime Republican Del. Lee Ware in November.

District 73

Leslie Mehta, who ran unsuccessfully against US Rep. Rob Wittman (R–1st) last November, defeated consultant Justin Woodford. AP called the race shortly after 8 p.m.

Mehta goes on to face Republican Del. Mark Earley Jr. in the general election.

District 75

AP called the three-person Democratic primary for Lindsey Dougherty around 9:20 p.m.; she defeated Dustin Wade and Stephen Miller-Pitts.

Dougherty will take on Del. Carrie Coyner in the November general election.

District 81

Incumbent Del. Delores McQuinn defeated Ariel Atkins, chair of the Henrico County School Board. AP called the race just before 8:15 p.m.

McQuinn is not scheduled to face a Republican challenger in November.

Local races

Richmond City Sheriff

The AP does not call local races. As of 10 p.m., incumbent Sheriff Antionette Irving led challenger William Burnett by just over 2,400 votes in an unofficial tally from the Virginia Department of Elections.

Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney

The AP does not call local races. As of 9:15 p.m., incumbent Colette McEachin held a roughly 12,000-vote lead over attorney Tom Barbour in the unofficial count released by the Virginia Department of Elections.

Charlottesville City Council

With all precincts reporting as of shortly after 8 p.m., Jen Fleisher has apparently topped the city's ranked choice primary with 53% of the vote. Current Mayor Juandiego Wade appears to have come in second, with 35%, while Vice Mayor Brian Pinkston has received 13% of the vote.

Albemarle County Board of Supervisors

With all precincts reporting as of about 8:30 p.m., substitute teacher Sally Duncan appears to have defeated Dave Shreve in the race to succeed three-term Jack Jouett Supervisor Diantha McKeel, with over 60% of the vote.
