On this weekend’s World Music Blog about the this week’s World Music Show (8/1), I’m not going to spin a long yarn about what’s happening and who I’m playing, except to say that you should for sure tune in to hear the mini-interview with the Brazilian musician Céu--and then come back to hear our entire conversation.
Not only do we talk about her latest--and really great album APKA! But we talk about her style of music, her love of Bob Marley and how, after 4 other albums, finally got comfortable expanding her vocal range. Plus, we also briefly talk about releasing an album during a pandemic and what both of our countries have in common.
After our chat, I dive into a bit of history of Brazilian music, circling around the start of the Tropicalia movement--that’s the time when arts and culture in Brazil exploded and brought the world Samba and Bossa Nova beats. Artists like Tom Ze, Sergio Mendes, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, to just name a few, brought about a musical juggernaut of sound.
Plus, I also “drop” (to use a music industry term) a new song by Seu Jorge about the International Day of Friendship.
Besides that, I’ll also spin news tracks from Ladama, La Dame Blanche, Afel Bocuoum and a Korean psychedelic folk band called Coreyah.
I’ll play a track from local Richmond musician Mike Ferry, who is a fiddle player and teacher in town and knows quite a bit about Scottish-Irish music and that group ended up in the Appalachian region.
Mixed throughout the rest of the show will be songs by Cibo Matto, Matsuki Ayumu, Cornershop, Ibibio Sound Machine and Panjabi MC--to just drop a few.
