On this sixth edition of Page’s Kitchen, we spend an intimate hour with the legendary Oklahoma songwriter and guitar slinger, John Weldon Cale, from a session recorded in the summer of 1990 at Richmond’s storied Floodzone studio in Shockoe Bottom.
J. J. Cale famously kept a low profile, avoiding the limelight at all costs, making this sit down with Page all the more important and revealing. He was joined by his musical partner and future bride, Christine Lakeland Cale, on guitar and backup vocals and former RVA fiddler, the very tasteful Cecil Hooker. You’ll hear many of J.J. Cale’s classics like "Magnolia," "Call Me the Breeze" and of course "After Midnight," which we’ll actually get two takes on, and some great insight into the Eric Clapton connection. And Page’s rapport with the late Americana legend is palpable.
We close the show with a powerful performance by Page himself, a blues tune with full band recorded by Bruce Olsen and produced by veteran Richmond musician Buzz Montsinger for his project, the Richmond Heart and Soul Revue. It's called "Catch Me When I Fall" and it's unforgettable.
