The forecast for Time For The Blues is hot music with John Mayall and Mike Zito

John Mayall and Mike Zito album covers
Featured music from John Mayall and Mike Zito

Henry and I hope you will join us this Saturday night, May 14th, at 9:00, for a fun and exciting edition of Time For The Blues! We’ve got a couple of greats for you and a whole lot of electrifying new talent to share with you and all in 59 minutes!

How do we do it?

Volume!

No really! We pack a lot of blues into our time together and this episode is no different. We’ve got a certified Blues Hall of Famer (who should be in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame if you ask me) in John Mayall who has released a new album, The Sun Is Shining Down, when most people his age would be content to sit in a rocking chair and yell at the neighborhood kids to stay off his lawn.

Mayall is still rocking all right, but he’s doing it in a studio with his friends and we’ve got a few sides from this new album to share with you. We’ve been fortunate enough to catch him on stage and the man may have lost a step or two due to age, but I’ll be damned if there are many that can keep up with him for a 90-minute set!

One thing about Mayall, he likes to surround himself with awesome guitarists. Look at some of the six string masters that have played beside him: Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Harvey Mandel, Coco Montoya, Walter Trout, and Carolyn Wonderland.

So we decided it was only fitting to put another wizard of the fretboard on the show. Now Mike Zito is not playing with Mayall, but he’s in our second spotlight with his award-winning release Resurrection. Did I mention that it won an award at the Blues Music Awards for best Blues Rock Album? I didn’t? Well, shame on me for keeping that quiet!

Just to make up for that little slip up, why don’t we play three sides from this award-winning album just for your listening pleasure? Will that make us square? I sure hope so, but don’t worry, we’ve still got more, more, more…

It’s no secret that Henry and I love movies. Sometimes we even think in movies – certain lines sum up our feelings at times, and once in a while they even come into play here at Time For The Blues. If you remember Animal House, you may remember a scene in which several of the guys from Delta House found themselves in a club watching Otis Day and the Knights.

One of them yells out, “Otis my man!” which confuses the heck out of Mr. Day…

Well, we’ve applied that same expression to three men who share the first name of Otis and invited them to play a song in their very own set. So, we’ll hear from Messrs. Otis Clay, Otis Rush, and Otis Spann.

And yet there is still more. Remember what I said. Volume.

We’ve got new releases from Tia Carroll, Kelly’s Lot, and Deb Ryder to round out the hottest 59 minutes on the planet!

And I’m sure we’ll have some bad jokes, well, maybe they’re not really bad, just misunderstood. You be the judge…

We’ll be glad to have your company if you care to join us at 9:00 this Saturday night. That’s May 14th, and you can find us on one of these great VPM Stations: 89.1 WCNV, Northern Neck; 90.1 WMVE, Chase City; and the flagships, 93.1 and 107.3 VPM-Music and 88.9 HD2, Richmond, where it’s always Time For The Blues!
