It’s that time again. Henry and I are whipping up a brand new episode of Time For The Blues and we’ve got some great music for you this Saturday night, May 28th, at 9:00! Don’t worry if you aren’t sitting by your radio, remember, you can always catch us live online at VPM.org. You won’t want to miss this one, all your friends will be talking about it on Monday!
Why is that you ask? Well, I’ll tell you. We’ve got some great goodies for you including the incomparable Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne with his new disc Blues From Chicago To Paris. What makes him so incomparable? Just check out the cover of the current issue of Living Blues magazine and read the attached story. Wayne is awesome, as anyone who caught his performance when he was at the Richmond Folk Festival a few years back.
This album is a love letter to two of our favorite blues artists of all time, Willie Dixon (Chicago) and Memphis Slim (Paris) and we’ve got sides from both cities. (They are two of my all-time favorite places on Earth I might add.) We think you are going to really enjoy these selections and I had a great time with this album, we just may have to revisit it in the near future.
Our second big feature is another love letter, this time from guitarist Sean Chambers to the man whom he stood next to for several years playing in his band and learning his chops, Hubert Sumlin. His new album, That's What I'm Talkin' About: Tribute To Hubert Sumlin, delivers a powerful collection of Sumlin’s best work, and trust me, Sumlin’s best work is a cause to celebrate!
Guitar slingers have long known how important Sumlin’s work was and Chambers has really outdone himself putting together this tribute album. Just for fun, we’ve included one of Sumlin’s solo works for your listening pleasure.
Just to stir up a little trouble, or at least a heated debate, we’ve included a set that discusses the battle between the sexes. While remaining as neutral as possible (after all, I don’t like sleeping on the couch!) I have pulled together a few sides from the likes of Diunna Greenleaf from her disc I Ain’t Playin’, Miss Bix from Bring It, and Bubba and the Big Bad Blues from Drifting to argue the point.
But really, it’s all in fun, so please don’t take it seriously. I can’t take another night on that couch!
But you know we’ve got even more good things for you! We’ve got new releases from Sandy Haley from her EP, Feels Like Freedom along with Steve Marriner from his disc, Hope Dies Last. And we’ve even got a selection from Tito Jackson (yes, that Tito Jackson) from his disc Under Your Spell!
