Virginia Opera returns to the Carpenter Theatre stage this week with Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance."  The fun show that's packed with laughs, cheers and foolery will be performed Friday evening (11/18) at 8pm and Sunday afternoon (11/20) at 2:30pm.

One of Gilbert & Sullivan's most popular operas, "a young apprentice pirate with no stomach for a future of piracy is due to be released from his required service on his twenty-first birthday.  Trouble is, fate might just intervene with the plan. With his newly found sweetheart, a long-winded but well-intentioned father, and a Pirate King boss with his own merry band of buccaneers, The Pirates of Penzance is a modern, major spectacle for the entire family."

I caught up with Artistic Director Adam Turner, who discussed this production and the history of "Pirates."

Yours in good music,
