In Your Ear Episode 38: Malpass Brothers/Doug Deming & The Jewel Tones

Malpass Brothers
Malpass Brothers

This edition of In Your Ear is a double dose of authenticity starting with a captivating brother duet who not only look but sound like they could be contemporaries of honky tonk heroes like Ernest Tubb, Faron Young and Webb Pierce. Their retro persona is way more than just an act…it’s an earnest and loving effort to preserve an era of country music that for many people defines it. Down to earth authenticity not part of today’s mainstream commercial country. Taylor and Christopher Malpass are on a mission to keep this genuine brand of American music alive. The session was recorded in January of 2015.

The second half of the show features one of America’s most vibrant genres--50s rockabilly, classic jump boogie and swing courtesy of Detroit native Doug Deming with his band the Jewel Tones. And when you throw in one of the most soulful and renowned blues harmonica players on the planet in the person of Dennis Gruenling, you’ve got one of the liveliest nights we’ve ever witnessed in Studio A, from October of 2015. Crank it up!

In Your Ear offers a chance to discover new artists and appreciate the “in the moment” creativity, inspiration and soul of live music. Studio A is a “great room,” a haven for artists with intimate, friendly and informed audiences and peerless audio fidelity. Host Tim Timberlake and In Your Ear studio president Carlos Chafin produce the programs, which feature three acts, reflecting the diversity and range of these special concerts. The eclectic selections cover many genres -- including bluegrass, jazz, blues, old time, Celtic, gospel and singer-songwriters of many styles. Artists range from superior local and regional talents, to premier acts from all over the country.

Production Funding of In Your Ear is made possible, in part, by... the Dean Foundation, presenting the Old Dominion Barn Dance, Digital Video Group, Infinity Financial Partners, Threshold Counsel, PC and Will and Molly Perkinson. Artist accommodations courtesy of the Hilton Garden Inn and the Hampton Inn West.
