Puccini's La Bohème

The Metropolitan Opera presents Giacomo Puccini's "La Bohème" on this week's Saturday matinee broadcast. The timeless tragedy returns with three dynamic duos as the bohemian lovers. Sopranos Federica Lombardi, Anita Hartig, and Elena Stikhina alternate as the heartbreaking seamstress Mimì, and tenors Matthew Polenzani and Stephen Costello share the role of the love-struck poet Rodolfo. Sopranos Olga Kulchynska, Heidi Stober, and Kristina Mkhitaryan and baritones Adam Plachetka and Alexey Markov are the tempestuous lovers Musetta and Marcello, and maestros Carlo Rizzi and Marco Armiliato take the podium to oversee Franco Zeffirelli’s magnificent production.

Joshua Borths, Resident Scholar at Virginia Opera gives us his thoughts on Puccini's classic. You can hear his previews on my "Afternoon Classical" show each Friday afternoon just before 5pm.

Tune in to hear "La Bohème" Saturday afternoon, January 13th at 12:30pm on VPM Music, 93.1 and 107.3 in central Virginia and streaming online here at vpm.org!

Yours in good music,
Mike Goldberg
