The Richmond Philharmonic, Richmond's community orchestra, will be performing "Fantastic Firsts" this Sunday in the Louis F. Ryan Recital Hall at St. Christopher's School. The program will feature the first symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven and Dmitri Shostakovich, as well as the Violin Concerto No. 1 by Max Bruch performed by soloist Daisuke Yamamoto, concertmaster for the Richmond Symphony.
I sat down for a preview of the program with Music Director Peter Wilson. We not only talked about the concert repertoire, but also his lengthy career as a performer, highlighted by his work with the the string section of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band.
The concert is Sunday afternoon at 4pm, and I'll be joining Peter and Daisuke for a pre-concert talk one hour before the performance.
Yours in good music,
Mike Goldberg
