Youngkin says SOL scores have ‘a long way to go’
Reported by VPM News’ Adrienne Hoar McGibbon

Virginia’s SOL scores for the 2023-2024 school year increased slightly across the board compared to the previous school year. But the results were still below pre-COVID-19 levels.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin discussed results of the state's annual K-12 performance assessments during a Tuesday press conference at the Patrick Henry Building in downtown Richmond.

“A ship that was off course has been turned around,” Youngkin said. “We are seeing progress, but we will also say today that we have a long way to go.”

Charlottesville council takes first step toward ranked choice voting
Reported by VPM News’ Meghin Moore

Charlottesville City Council on Monday approved the first reading of an ordinance that would result in Charlottesville using ranked choice voting for its June 2025 council primary. The city would become the second Virginia locality to implement the system; Arlington County first used it during its June 2023 council primary.

Former Democratic Del. Sally Hudson, an advocate for the practice, said voters ranking multiple preferred candidates, rather than voting for one person, makes elections fairer: “We should always give voters the opportunity to share how they feel about all the candidates.”
