RPS board votes to reinstate continuing contracts for ASL teachers
Reported by VPM News’ Keyris Manzanares
During nearly an hour of public comment at Tuesday’s Richmond school board meeting, American Sign Language teachers and current and former students advocated on behalf of continuing contracts.
Melody Winters, an ASL interpreter at Huguenot High School, said they had been given “notices of appointment” — which have no legal obligations — for the 2024-25 school year rather than contracts.
“I recognize the concern and anxiety that the notices of appointment created,” Richmond Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras said. “At no time — never — was there any intention to remove any ASL instructors from RPS [or] to change any of the protections that they had under their contracts.”
Dominion changes location of planned Chesterfield gas plant
Reported by VPM News’ Patrick Larsen
Dominion Energy announced Wednesday that it’s relocating the proposed Chesterfield Energy Reliability Center to the adjacent site of the retired Chesterfield Power Station. The new site sits northwest of Dutch Gap Conservation Area.
The new site comes with a conditional use permit approved in 2010 that the county says would apply to the proposed gas plant — allowing the project to continue without public hearings and notices that are part of the county’s permitting process.
But opponents of the move, like environmental group Friends of Chesterfield, say the existing permit shouldn’t apply to the new project.
