$6M land deal telegraphs apartment project near Virginia Center Commons
Reported by Richmond Bizsense’s Jonathan Spiers
An apartment development that’s set to add hundreds of units near the transforming Virginia Center Commons site is underway following a multimillion-dollar land deal that’s been over a year in the making.
Bristol Development Group has started construction on a five-story, 279-unit apartment building at 10551 Telegraph Road after paying $6 million for the 3.3-acre parcel in a deal that closed last month.
The seller was Mohawk Investment Partners LLC, which purchased the undeveloped pad site in 2022 from National Financial Realty Holdings, the owner of the adjacent Colonial Place office park. Bristol’s 7-acre project includes part of the office park property.
Can Can in Carytown set to be sold for second time in 4 years
Reported by Richmond Bizsense’s Mike Platania
A Carytown dining institution is changing hands yet again.
Can Can Brasserie is set to be sold to Housepitality Family, the local restaurant group that owns spots like The Boathouse and Casa del Barco.
Can Can has been serving French fare at 3120 W. Cary St. since 2005 when the Ripp family opened it in the heart of Carytown.
A year after the death of family patriarch Dick Ripp in 2019, the Ripps’ family business, The Restaurant Co., sold Can Can to brothers John and Paul Kincaid. The Kincaids had worked there as chef and manager for years and took it over amid the pandemic as first-time restaurant owners.
Now the Kincaids are passing the restaurant along to Housepitality in a deal Paul described as seamless.
New restaurant Brazen taking over former Olio, Lucky Whale space on Cary
Reported by Richmond Bizsense’s Mike Platania
A veteran of the local restaurant scene is stepping out on his own with a new concept.
Neil McLean is preparing to open Brazen in the former Lucky Whale and Olio space at 2028 W. Cary St. in the Fan.
McLean has been working in the back-of-the-house of Richmond restaurants for over a decade, including stints at Tarrant’s, Max’s on Broad, Lunch and Supper, and most recently, Pinky’s in Scott’s Addition. He said after getting counsel from Pinky’s owner Steve DeRaffele, with whom McLean has worked for years, he decided to ink the deal on Cary Street for a place of his own.
Though its name has a different spelling, Brazen’s menu will lean on braised dishes that are cooked slowly, typically over hours.
Region’s newest indoor golf location to open in Midlothian
Reported by Richmond Bizsense’s Michael Schwartz
Kyle Petersen was looking for a way to take practice golf shots in his backyard, before the idea took on a life of its own. Next thing he knew, he’s co-owner of the region’s newest indoor golf simulator facility.
Petersen and his golfing buddy Jarad Earley later this month will open Green Club at 6109 Harbourside Centre Loop in Midlothian.
The facility features two Trackman golf simulator-powered hitting bays, a putting green and other amenities.
