Ranked choice voting is coming to Charlottesville in 2025
Reported by VPM News’ Meghin Moore
Ahead of the 4–1 City Council vote, many speakers signed up to offer their support, including Nicholas Co, a Navy veteran who resides in the city and is a state volunteer with Veterans for All Voters. He told councilors that adopting ranked choice voting enriches political discourse and “strengthens the fabric of our community.”
Currently, Arlington County is the only locale using the system for some local elections.
“To use the popular parlance of our time,” former Del. Sally Hudson said, “this ordinance did not just ‘fall out of a coconut tree.’ We exist in the context of all that came before us, and in Charlottesville, that context goes back centuries. I hope that you will join the three founding fathers emblazoned on this building in doing your part to build a more perfect union today.”
Goochland County approves rock quarry project despite Henrico’s concerns
Reported by VPM News’ Lyndon German
Henrico County supervisors and residents attended Tuesday’s meeting of the Goochland County board to request those supervisors defer approving new development at a local quarry.
The development operated by Luck Stone Corporation, a Virginia-based stone and gravel company, has run its Rockville rock quarry for more than 60 years. Residents fear the company’s recent request could have an adverse impact on both localities. Its latest plans call for conditional use of around 70 acres to support the quarry’s various operations.
Goochland supervisors unanimously approved the request.
