Here’s a recap of the top stories on the morning of Sept. 17, 2024:

The Sprout School opens two new Richmond child care centers
Reported by VPM News’ Megan Pauly

Maria Small lives in Fulton and works in downtown Richmond. But for about a year, she was driving to and from Midlothian each day in order to get a few hours of child care for her daughter.

Then a spot opened at Fulton Montessori, which became a new branch of the Sprout School this summer. Enrolling her daughter in a new day care made Small’s life easier in many ways, she told VPM News.

The Sprout School, which opened its first location at the Richmond Children’s Museum in 2016, also added a program at St. Andrew’s School in Oregon Hill — and it has plans for at least two more centers, including one in Henrico County, in the works.

Richmond’s Pipeline Trail walkway closed until further notice
Reported by VPM News’ Patrick Larsen

Richmonders are dealing with news that one of the city’s worst-kept secrets is closed while work begins on a long-term plan for the area.

The city’s Department of Public Utilities gave an update on the downtown Pipeline Trail late last week, saying work to fix a leak from the sewage pipe highlighted other safety concerns on the catwalk above it.

S. Preston Duncan, a Richmond-based writer, started a petition on Sunday with a simple title: “Give us back our Pipeline Trail!” The petition reached its 800-signature goal just before 5 p.m. on Monday.

“[It] seems to engender a sense of community,” Duncan said of the trail. “I've had far more conversations with strangers at the pipeline than anywhere else on the river.”
