Time For The Blues Serves Up A Heaping Helping Of Hot Leftovers

Every year at Thanksgiving, Henry and I settle in for Thanksgiving with our families. Then Henry wanders off to watch football and I help clear the table and wrap up what is leftover.

Speaking of leftovers every year, we call our first Saturday show after Thanksgiving our “Hot Leftovers Show.” We cull through the shows we’ve done throughout the year and find the best songs that we DIDN’T play and moosh ‘em together for one show.

This year we’ve put together one heck of a show. And the only turkeys are the ones you eat with the remnants of Thanksgiving dinner.

We’re going to kick things off with one of the busiest blues artists in 2024, Albert Castiglia. Albert’s been a friend of ours for several years and we are delighted to see his success! The next time Albert’s in town, we’ll be sure to let you know well in advance. You won’t want to miss his live show.

Next up is Jeff Pitchell and also Gerald McClendon. Then we’ve got more shredding guitarists: Ghalia Volt (who was just here at the Beacon Theatre), Joe Bonamassa, and Johnny Burgin, aka Rocking Johnny.

And there’s more…

Otis Blackwell is remembered as one of the greatest songwriters that America produced. He wrote many songs that were staples of Elvis Presley shows. Well, in 1994 or thereabouts, a lot of talented people recorded a tribute album to Blackwell. We’ve got one for you from Graham Parker.

Albert Castiglia returns for an encore with his take on a Willie Dixon classic.

We also return to our celebration of the life of John Mayall with one more tune from his band, The Bluesbreakers.

Henry says he’s got a “few surprises” for you, so I better leave you hanging for a little while. You’ll just need to tune in and hear for yourself Let’s just say that one band left the blues behind in favor of disco, while another artist lost his contract to The Teen Queens who had one hit, then *poof” they disappeared into obscurity.

All in all, it’s a great show and we would love to have you join us for the fun if you care to join us at 9:00 this Saturday night. That’s November 30th, and you can find us on one of these great VPM Stations: 89.1 WCNV, Heathsville; 90.1 WMVE, Chase City; and the flagships, 93.1 and 107.3 VPM-Music and 88.9 HD2, Richmond, and online at VPM.org where it’s always Time For The Blues!
