If you’ve never witnessed the other-worldly sounds created by the three remarkable artists known collectively as Alash, this program affords a spellbinding sampler of the ages-old art of throat singing. They captivated the 2013 edition of the Richmond Folk Festival and their journey to Richmond from Tuva, a small state in the Russian Federation in southern Siberia, may well be the longest for any of our 20 years’ worth of visiting musicians. Their ability to create multiple notes or tones by changing the size and shape of resonant spaces, meaning their mouths and throats, is pure magid, and represents the way humans communicated before there was spoken word or language. The Tuvans now number some 300,000 mostly nomadic people who move four times annually to accommodate their four extreme seasons. And the men of Alash represent one of the most profound living history lessons anywhere. This was recorded at In Your Ear Studios in February of 2024.
