This edition of the program showcases another stellar group of Virginia musicians who have made the most of their traditional Shenandoah Valley roots, while evolving into one of Americana’s most beloved high-energy bands. Coming together while students at Harrisonburg’s Eastern Mennonite University two decades ago, Trent Wagler, Eric Brubaker, Jay Lapp and Brian Dickel formed the Steel Wheels as an acoustic quartet with Trent as lead singer/songwriter. They added percussionist Kevin Garcia in 2017 and most recently Jeremy Darrow has filled Eric’s bass player slot. The band launched its own music festival in 2012, known and loved as Red Wing Roots in the shadows of Natural Chimneys near Mt. Solon. We caught the Steel Wheels as they rolled through Richmond to play the Broadberry back in the spring of 2024.
