Henry Cook and I hope you will join us this Saturday night, February 1st, at nine o’clock when we reveal our latest episode of Time For The Blues on VPM-Music. We are celebrating the release of Big Al & The Heavyweights latest compact disc, Blues Power on VizzTone Records.

It was a little while ago that we featured Big Al and Company for their previous CD, which we liked a lot, so we’re really stoked to see what Blues Power has to offer. There have been a few lineup changes in the band, and we are curious to see how things have worked out.

We’ve also got a tribute to the great keyboardist Barry Goldberg. When we plotted this show, it was intended to be a retrospective of the career of a man whom we both admired. Unfortunately, before we finished the show, Goldberg had passed on and rather than dropping our retrospective, we decided to make it a celebration of his life and music.

Goldberg may not have been a household name, but he played with just about everyone from Bob Dylan to Mike Bloomfield to Charlie Musselwhite, to the Rides with Kenny Wayne Sheppard and Stephen Stills to our friend Shari Puorto. There have been so many with whom Goldberg has played with to list here.

Henry has found a retrospective of some of Goldberg’s rarest releases and we’re going to share a few with you. Sides written by the likes of T-Bone Walker, Tampa Red, and Goldberg himself among others.

Then we’ve got some sides that feature Goldberg in a supporting role with artists like Charlie Musselwhite’s South Side Band and Electric Flag. If you aren’t familiar with Barry Goldberg when we start, don’t be surprised if you become a fan by the end of the program.

But there’s even more, we’ve got recent tracks from Jimmy Carpenter and Gerald McClendon.

So, let’s get together and raise a toast to all the people who make the blues. It’s Saturday night, the 1st of February, at nine o’clock and you can find us on one of these great VPM Stations: 89.1 WCNV, Heathsville; 90.1 WMVE, Chase City; and the flagships, 93.1 and 107.3 VPM-Music and 88.9 HD2, Richmond, and online at VPM.org where it’s always Time For The Blues!
