Doug Richards launched VCU’s renowned Jazz Studies program way back in 1980 and since then, his former students have recorded and toured with luminaries like the Count Basie Orchestra, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Wynton Marsalis. Doug also created GAME, the Great American Music Ensemble, for twenty years one of the top big bands in the nation. This edition of JAMinc Presents offers highlights from a September 2024 live performance that sprang from the Doug Richards Orchestra’s most recent album Through a Sonic Prism…the Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. Doug gathered 17 of his seasoned alums plus the incomparable RVA vocalist Laura Anne Singh for a power packed live concert at VCU’s Singleton Center in the Fan. The Jobim tunes from the album come in the 2nd set...but first, Prof. Richards chose to run some of his favorites from the GAME days including tunes by Rodgers and Hammerstein and Duke Ellington.
