Tony Furtado was turning heads as a hot banjo player back in the 1980s, winning the prestigious national championship at Winfield Kansas in 1987 just out of his teens. He won it again four years later after signing with Rounder Records and he’d join up with Laurie Lewis & Grant Street and ease into mastering slide guitar along with the 5 string. Tony was an early guest on our In Your Ear concert series, playing solo in Studio A in March of 2009. He’s called Portland Oregon home for many years, marrying another gifted singer songwriter Stephanie Schneiderman and adding another art form to his resume…sculpture. He was back in Richmond for the first time in a while, to play a Sunday matinee at Révéler Experiences in Carytown in December of 2024. He was joined by fellow Portlander Luke Price who provided perfect fiddle fills and backing vocals. There was also an RVA ringer who sat in on piano…the versatile Daniel Clarke.
