Here’s a recap of the top stories for the week of May 9, 2025:

Real estate developer purchases former Feed More headquarters for $13 million
Reported by BizSense’s Mike Platania

New Jersey-based real estate developer K. Hovnanian finalized a deal last week to buy a 6-acre property along Rhoadmiller Street that the region's largest food bank called home for more than 20 years.

The developer is planning to raze the 90,000-square-foot former tobacco warehouses for a new housing development called The Lofts at Durham Park, which will place 200 new rental units within blocks of the Diamond District.

Demolition of the former Feed More buildings is scheduled to begin in the next few months. Feed More relocated to a newly built $40 million facility in Henrico County last year.

Powhatan County approves rezoning request for private school campus relocating from Henrico County
Reported by BizSense’s Jackie DiBartolomeo

Hunter Classical Christian School, currently located on the grounds of Derbyshire Baptist Church in Henrico County, recently earned approval to rezone around 27 acres of a 110-acre parcel in Powhatan, where the school intends to spend around $38 million building out a new campus over the next 10 years.

The school opened in Manakin Sabot in 2012 with 26 students and moved to its current location — which houses 150 students in grades K–8 and a staff of 35 — in 2021.

The move to Powhatan comes as the school is expanding to include high school and enrolling its first ninth-grade class in the fall. The new campus is set to be developed in phases, with plans to be ready for students starting in the fall of 2029.

VCU Health's $28 million expansion to downtown children’s hospital set to open next year
Reported by BizSense’s Jack Jacobs

VCU Health recently announced plans to open a new 20-bed neonatal intensive care unit at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU in downtown Richmond.

The unit will be housed on the fourth floor of the Children’s Tower at 1000 E. Broad St. — a relatively new addition to the children’s hospital that opened in April 2023. The new NICU will contain 16 single rooms and a pair of twin rooms.

Construction on the 28,000-square-foot NICU has kicked off, and the project is anticipated to cost under $28 million. The new NICU is expected to open in January and would expand the pediatric hospital’s existing 40-bed NICU, which is housed in the VCU Medical Center Critical Care facility.
