Richmond reinstates ‘RPS 5’ as part of transportation labor contract
Reported by VPM News’ Keyris Manzanares

After more than a year of negotiations, Richmond Public Schools and the union representing its transportation workers — Laborers’ International Union of North America, LiUNA Local 804 — have reached final terms on their first-ever collective bargaining agreement.

In a joint press conference Monday, RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras said both sides “gave a little bit” to ensure a smooth start to the upcoming school year.

Richmond’s Hair We Go braids confidence into next generation
Reported by VPM News’ Keyris Manzanares

Hair We Go isn’t your average summer camp. It’s a place where Richmond girls learn that hair can be more than a style: It can be a step toward confidence and building a business.

From June to August, dozens of girls ages 11–19 learn the art of braiding — including classic styles like basic cornrows and trends like knotless braids.

Beyond technique, the girls are also taught about how to build a brand and dream like business owners.

“It's just so much more than braiding,” said founder Shavon Ragsdale, who also leads the Village Against Violence nonprofit. “We need to teach youth how to be themselves. How to find their way. I tell my students, ‘If you can braid, you can start a business.’”

Ragsdale said many of the girls come from neighborhoods where opportunities and resources are limited. At Hair We Go, she wanted to offer something unique: access, sisterhood and a place to grow.
