The 116th Congress began its first session yesterday (Thursday), with an unprecedented number of women, including 7th District Democrat Abigail Spanberger.

The gavel sounded in the House with a new Democratic majority and a new member from Virginia’s 7th, Abigail Spanberger, whose very first vote was not for Nancy Pelosi, as she had promised, but for new leadership “Spanberger, Bustos.”

She voted for U.S. Representative Cheri Bustos and was one of 15 Democrats that did not vote for Pelosi, who got 220 of the 430 votes cast. Spanberger said later considering Pelosi’s mandate, she was committed to working with her and colleagues on both sides of the aisle and the two of them posed together smiling with her family, during swearing in.

Late last night, Spanberger and a Democratic-controlled House, voted on a package of bills that would reopen the federal government without paying for the border wall, which drew swift veto threat from the White House.
