Elvin R. Cosby, Henrico County's longest-serving employee, retires after 73 years.

Henrico County officially said goodbye to its longest-serving employee at a going-away party yesterday. Elvin Cosby is retiring after 73 years.

It’s not the first time Cosby has been honored. Last week the county board recognized him and his family when he announced he was retiring, last year, they named a road for him. But here, it was standing room only as present and former county managers, his family and others stood up to praise a man.

County Manager John Vithoulkas says knocked down racial and educational barriers.

“You define the heart of a public servant and what is possible through public service.”

He joined in 1946. For the last 10 years, he has been street maintenance supervisor.

Vithoulkas said the county also plans to name a day to honor Elvin Cosby, who retires today after 73 years.
