Judge Alston would be President Trump’s second African American nominee to the federal bench. He was endorsed by both of Virginia’s Democratic Senators and goes to the full Senate on a strong cloture vote last week.
“He was overwhelmingly moved forward, 74-19.” Carl Tobias, Law Professor at the University of Richmond.
“He has been on the court of appeals for a number of years and before that was a circuit judge in Prince William County.”
Observers say he is tough, but compassionate. He once sentenced a father whose daughter had died in a hot van, not for one year in prison as recommended by the jury, but to spend one day in jail for seven years on his daughter’s birthday and to run an annual blood drive in her name.
