Petersburg officials call the development one of the largest in years. It’s part of the former Brown & Williamson tobacco factory which already has about 200 new loft-style units.
Now they’re adding 50 artist live-work spaces, for people making less than $48,000. Features include up to 150 square feet of extra room to be used as a studio, says Todd Graham of the Cameron Foundation which helped plan the design.
“So we expect this to be a major draw for artists who are looking for affordable space to live and create their artwork.”
Graham says the cost of the apartments will run between $650 to $1500.
The City and the Cameron Foundation worked with the Minnesota-based Artspace, a non-profit that creates affordable and sustainable space for artists.
The units are scheduled to be ready by late 2020.
