Kaine Calls For Stronger Background Checks

Virginia Democratic Senator Tim Kaine spoke on the Senate floor Wednesday and pushed for passage of a comprehensive background check for guns.

Senator Kaine says he remembers the day 32 people were killed at Virginia Tech.

"The shooting at Virginia Tech happened because of a weakness in the background check system.  The individual, a young man, Seung-Hui Cho, who killed 32 people was prohibited from having a weapon because he had been adjudicated mentally ill and dangerous, but weaknesses in the background check system enabled him to get a weapon anyway."

He says it has been too many years and too many tragedies not to strengthen the law.

"And so I join with my colleagues who say House Bill 8 which has come from the House that is a comprehensive background check system bill that keeps weapons out of the hands of people who are dangerous to themselves or others, is something we should absolutely pass."

The NRA opposes the bill and it faces major opposition in the Republican-controlled Senate.
